Bhajji axed; 5 uncapped players chosen for Tests vs West Indies

Are Harbhajan Singh’s days as an international cricketer numbered? Well, that is anybody’s conjecture, but for now the feisty off-spinner is out of reckoning. The veteran of 98 Tests has been dumped by the national selection committee for the first Test against the West Indies.
He was ignored for the just-concluded one-day series against England. DNA had reported that the Jalandhar player’s chances of selection were bleak.
The Krishnamachari Srikkanth-led committee chose R Ashwin instead. The Tamil Nadu off-spinner has been selected, presumably, for the variety in his armoury.
The 25-year-old spinner has been in awesome form. He had taken 10 wickets in the five matches in the recent one-day series against England. Apart from reposing faith in Pragyan Ojha, the selectors have also included Ajinkya Rahane for his consistent performances in one-dayers.
In fact, the squad, announced after a meeting of the selection committee in Kolkata on Friday, includes five uncapped players: Ajinkya Rahane, fast bowlers Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav, and spinners Rahul Sharma and Ashwin.
The seniors Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh, who were injured during the tour of England in July-September, have been named for the first of three Tests.
Harbhajan, who has 406 scalps in 98 Tests, has paid the price for a poor Test series in England where India were humbled 4-0 and lost their number one ranking, before suffering a 3-0 defeat in the one-dayers. He bagged just two wickets at an average of 143.50 in the two Tests he played, before heading home with an abdominal strain.
“We’ve taken everybody into consideration. We had a detailed discussion with captain and coach. We had a healthy discussion,” chief selector Srikkanth said in Kolkata after the meeting. “We have the best team. We had to look at building the side from a future perspective also. You have seen the results yourself. When we gave opportunity to the youngsters, they won a series 5-0,” the chairman remarked.
Srikkanth avoided a direct answer when asked about Harbhajan’s omission. “These are selection-related issues. We cannot discuss these matters here. These are internal matters of the selection committee,” he said
Praising Dhoni, Srikkanth said the selectors were already planning for the Australian tour. “We must give credit to Dhoni. He has done an excellent job. We discussed a lot about the Australian tour and what should be the way forward. The one good thing that has come out of the one-day series is that we had a very healthy competition which is always good for Indian cricket.”

Tendulkar has all the records, but Lara is better: Murali

London: Oct 31, 2011

Legendary Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan opines that even though Sachin Tendulkar is ahead of every batsman in terms of runs scored and centuries hit, the great West Indies batsman Brian Lara is better than him.

"Statistics-wise he may be but there are better players such as Ricky Ponting while Brian Lara is the best player that has ever been. When I bowled, I always found Brian Lara difficult,” Murali said.

Murali, who retired from international cricket after the 2011 World Cup, bagged 800 Test wickets and 534 One-Day International scalps.

The legendary spinner doesn’t even rate himself higher than any other bowler.

"I never really feel that I'm the greatest bowler in the game. Statistics-wise I may be the greatest but I have seen so many great bowlers, great spinners over the years. Shane Warne is one of the greats and it's good for the game that he took a lot of wickets [708 in Tests, 293 in ODIs] and was part of the winning Australian sides. He was a great ambassador for world cricket,” Murali told London Evening Standard.

Murali said India looked poor during their tour of England, wherein they lost the Test series 4-0 and ODI series 3-0.

"India looked a poor side. Sri Lanka weren't poor. We (Sri Lanka) lost only one Test, almost won the one-day cricket and won the Twenty20 match, so I think we did fairly well,” he said.

Talking about Graeme Swann, currently ranked number one in ODI rankings, Murali said, "He started very late. He has a long way to go. I'm not going to put him in Shane Warne's category but he's a good bowler.

The legendary spinner also added that England need to win more matches overseas to prove they really are the No. 1 side. “England are a good team. But the best team in the world? That is difficult to say unless they go and beat people in other people's own backyards."

Bishan Singh Bedi, the former Indian captain and left-arm spinner, says Murali is a pie-thrower.  When asked about Bedi’s comments on him, Murali retorts, "I don't care who Bedi is. He is just another cricketer who played a long time ago. That's it! He has only taken around 200 wickets [266], many people have taken more than 200 in world cricket.”

"I believed in what I wanted to achieve and I achieved it. I have no regrets, I enjoyed my game. I retired when I thought it was time. I didn't want to go on to take 1,000 wickets. Now I just enjoy my life with my family. I look back and think, 'I've had a very good life.' Imagine how many people are suffering to get one meal in this world. I am blessed,” Murali said.

Despite having played his entire career in the backdrop of 26-year civil war between the majority Sinhalese population and the Tamils, Murali insists there was never any kind of tension within the Sri Lankan squad.

"It was not difficult at all. At the time there was nothing really racist about Sri Lankan cricket. If you are good enough, you played for your country. For us players, the civil war and its problems didn't matter. We didn't care much as sport was going on,” he insisted.

Murali, who developed the reputation for being the prankster in the Sri Lanka dressing room, says, "You have to be a little bit like that when you're playing. You have to be joking, have fun, otherwise you will get bored."

The right-arm spinner had migrated from India with his parents, says India is his second home. "My first home is obviously Sri Lanka. India is a great country but a second home."

Murali also praised England batsman Graham Thorpe, who retired from the international cricket in 2005 after scoring 6,744 runs in 100 Tests.

"When I started, English batsmen did not play spin much, then they were not good enough. Nowadays English players play spinners better: reading spin from the hand, not playing off the pitch. Graham Thorpe was the best English batsman, he read my spin and played me well."

IPL 5 from April 4 to May 27

MUMBAI: Despite the growing consensus over Ahmedabad deserving an Indian Premier League (IPL) team, there seems to be no indication for now that the BCCI will facilitate any such move.
The IPL governing council's newly-elected members met in Hyderabad on Friday to discuss the issue surrounding the termination of Kochi IPL and also finalized the dates for the fifth edition of the tournament to be played in 2012.

Delhi start IPL training for next year

New Delhi While the top fours teams of this year’s IPL are still toiling hard against sides from all over the world in the Champions League T20 — Delhi Daredevils — the franchise that finished at the bottom in the May event, have already started conceiving their plans for the next season of the IPL. With more than six months left for the IPL, Delhi Daredevils have already started work for the next edition. They planned a clandestine five day camp at the Jamia Milia Islamia University grounds touted as their pre-season preparations. Bowling specialist Eric Simons, who has according to sources taken over as the head coach in place of Greg Shepherd along with TA Sekhar, expressed concern over his team’s downhill trudge in the 10-team competition and said that he did not want that the situation pans out in a similar way as it did last season for the Daredevils.
“It isn’t that we lacked on talent but strategy played the key part. Somewhere down the line, we faltered in execution. Daredevils has always generated good support but we failed to give them the result. I think we need to learn a lot by the challenges thrown to us by other teams. We have learnt our lessons and this is a move to iron out flaws and see what works better for the team,” Simons told Sportline.
Playing at the newly refurbished Jamia Sports Complex under the glimmering white light, Daredevils were divided in teams and made to play against each other. Despite an attempt to keep the session under wraps, they couldn’t prevent the stands from being packed with university students giving it more or less an ambience that the city side is accustomed to play in during IPL. And besides all the experienced campaigners in Irfan Pathan, Naman Ojha, Ashoke Dinda, Avishkar Salvi, many young faces were tapped from different parts of the country.
On being asked the reason for this development, Simons said, “It is important to have a strong bench strength. Last year we tapped uncapped foreigners but then realised that it wasn’t those four foreigners who were winning you the match but seven Indians. So further on that realisation, we decided to select the best out of the domestic talent.”
With the Ranji Trophy just weeks away, Pathan and Salvi felt it was a good session ahead of the domestic season, and in their attempt to get back to the mainstream fold. “These camps always provide you competitive cricket. Moreover, it is raining in Mumbai and we are handicapped. So it is better here that we are getting quality practice,” Salvi said.

For the new players, the entire session was like a trial. They were expected to showcase their T20 abilities in order to be in the list of 30 players. Among the youngsters was Delhi’s Milind Kumar who got a call from the franchise. By that time he was also busy with his Ranji camp but managed both. He was put in one of the teams for the last match and played a sweet cameo of 25 runs going in at number 5. “I enjoyed the camp. To be with all the senior cricketers motivates you and pushes you to keep performing. It was a trial for me and the way I did was satisfactory. But they made sure that our performance in the domestic season will be the only deciding factor for selection,” said Milind who plays in the U-22 category for Delhi.
